Kevin Smith visits the Star Wars set

It’s well documented that Kevin Smith is a die hard Star Wars fan, he has referenced the franchise in nearly all of his films.
Smith is currently in the UK, touring two of his many podcasts and was invited along to the set by JJ Abrams.
Due to the NDA (non disclosure agreement) that he had to sign, he couldn’t reveal any details of the film. But he did put out this picture on his Instagram account with the following text.

“Visited JJ and his EP VII set. I signed the NDA so all I can share are this old Bantha-Tracks subscriber’s tears and snotty nose of joy. The Force is WITH this movie. Holy Sith…”

Smith mentioned on the most recent episode of Hollywood babble-on, which was record before the visit:

“I got an Email about a month ago from a dude who was like ‘Hey Kev, we haven’t talked in a while. Been thinking about you.
We just started shooting in the desert, man. We’re heading over to London, if you’re gonna be in London, then blow me up and roll up on the set, man’.
signed JJ Abrams.

So I hit him back and I was like, ‘I am gonna be in fucking England. I’m coming over to do some shows with my friend Ralph’.

So he was like ‘oh great, then you’ve gotta come stop by the set’.

So, I was just like, wow. How easy was this? I didn’t have to ask, he hit me up out of nowhere and shit.
And I’m sitting there going, I don’t know him that well. So I started second guessing it and I was like you know what, I’ve gotta see if this is legit. So I wrote him back an email and I was like
‘I just checked in with your office, so I’m all set to visit. But just in case, I wanna put this out there just in case you hit the wrong Kevin in your address book, this is Kevin Smith. The Clerks guy’
and he wrote back the perfect email, just a two letter response ‘oh fuck’.”

Andy Serkis talks Star Wars

We’ve long assumed that Andy Serkis would play a mo-caped character in Star Wars: Episode VII.
In a recent interview with Sci-Fi Now, the man himself said that his company, The Imaginarium, will be doing all of the mo-cap work for the film. Although he doesn’t confirm if he is playing a mo-cap character.

He said:
“It’s extraordinary. I grew up with Star Wars and was a massive fan of the original films. I never imagined in a million years that I’d be engaging with this. It’s just come about so organically.
“J.J. Abrams and I met, and we just had this incredible kind of vibe between us. He said, ‘You’d fit really well in this universe,’ and I said, ‘I think I probably could.’ We’re working very closely, as I say, in two ways: the Imaginarium is providing all of the performance characters, and I myself am playing a character in it.
“I’m thrilled, deeply excited. Sitting at that read-through the other day was just extraordinary. It was an amazing event; being with the original cast was just incredible. I just think the script is so wonderful, and both the old and the newbies in the cast are just so thrilled and excited to get together.”

I’m excited by his casting, Serkis is the pioneer of motion capture acting.

Batfleck revealed

Zack Snyder had released the first image of Ben Affleck as Batman. You can’t really see much, but so far, I like what I see. It’s very reminiscent of the costume from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns.
Is that the Joker’s face I spot, just behind Batman?

The Hollywood reporter have revealed that Lionsgate is working on a Power Rangers reboot.

According to THR “the new movie franchise will bring back a group of high school kids with superpowers they must harness and use as a team to save the world.”

Saban Brands head, Haim Saban said:

“Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level.”

Jon Feltheimer CEO of lionsgate added:

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Haim Saban and his team to maximise the potential of this immensely successful and universally recognised franchise.”

I will probably end up seeing this movie. I was eleven when the mighty morphing power rangers started. Now, my kids watch it on Netflix. My son is especially a big fan of all things power rangers.

More news as we get it.

Red Dwarf fans were left disappointed by series 9, which seemed to struggle in its attempts to reunite the beloved cast after over a decade apart. However, the show’s return to its roots in series 10 proved a hit with fans, delivering some of the strongest episodes in years.

Now, fans have reason to celebrate once again with the recent announcement of series 11. Stars Chris Barrie, Robert Llewellyn, Danny John-Jules, and Craig Charles confirmed the news at a recent sci-fi convention, revealing that filming is set to begin in October 2014. While the wait until 2015 for new episodes may be long, fans can’t wait to catch up with the quirky mining ship crew once more.

Harry Potter spin-off to be a trilogy

20140330-200334.jpg

JK Rowling announced today that her Harry Potter spin-off ‘fantastic beasts and where to find them’ will be a trilogy.
In the reality of the “Potter-verse”, the book is a textbook used to teach the pupils at Hogwarts.

Warner Bros chief, Kevin Tsujihara said that the film is neither a sequel nor a prequel but an “extension” on the universe.

The story is set in New York, 70-years before we meet Harry.
The protagonist of the movie is Newt Scamander, the author of a guide about magical creatures.

The film marks Rowling’s debut as a screenwriter.

I’m actually intrigued by this premise. It’s refreshing to see a franchise expanding its universe rather than churn out an unnecessary prequel or sequel. If successful, I think many existing franchises will follow suit.

More than 450 million copies of Rowling’s seven Harry Potter books have been sold worldwide.

Star Wars news

20140318-234611.jpg

After nearly two years of speculation we have finally been teased with a little info about the highly anticipated Star Wars Episode VII.
The film will be set 30-years after the events in return of the Jedi and will focus on a new trio of heroes, with some yet unconfirmed cameos from the original stars.
Lucasfilm also confirmed today that filming will begin in London, in May.
I am ridiculously excited about this film, I grew up on Star Wars and I can’t wait to take my kids to their first official Star Wars experience. May the force be with all of us.

Rocky Blu-Ray release party

Rocky

To celebrate the release of Rocky:The Heavyweight Collection on blu ray, I attended a special screening held by Twentieth Century Fox.
The Heavyweight Collection features all 6 classic movies along with a ton of new extras.

Also in attendance was heavyweight boxer David “The Hayemaker”.
Haye has long held a passion for boxing. He began training at age six, at the now famous Fitzroy Lodge Boxing Club in South London.
He quickly excelled as a junior boxer and won several of his fights.

Before the screening, Haye took part in Q&A with TalkSport host, Steve Bunce. Once Dave was seated and comfortable the inevitable question was asked: “how much do you like Rocky?”.
Haye replied that he didn’t start from the first one but the 3rd instalment of Rocky, which he loved and had seen a few times before he went back to watch the first two.

Haye was laid back and spoke candidly about the fight against ‘The Big Hairy Russian’ Wladimir Klitschko and the injury that made him retire from boxing.
The injury is still visible, Haye at times found it difficult to hold the mic.

When asked about his inspiration he mentioned a few boxers, including Rocky, played by Sylvester Stallone, but his main influence was Muhammad Ali, one of the greatest boxers in history.

Haye went on to speak about his future plans of opening a Health Spa, in Dubai. He also aims to break into acting.

It was a great experience to have seen David Haye and listen to some of his experiences and his future plans, he expects to make a full recovery I hope he gets a chance to fight in the ring once again.

As a man of my age, it’s slightly embarrassing to admit that this was my first introduction into the world of Rocky Balboa. I look forward to going the distance with The Heavyweight collection
