Review-The last man on the moon

In December 1972, Captain Cernan became the last man to step foot on the moon. He did so with excitement and pride, but so few of us know his story. However, Captain Eugene Cernan has decided to share his epic and, deeply personal story with the world. The Last Man On The Moon tells his trials and tribulations, his love and loss and how he overcame all this, to walk on the surface of the moon.

This is documentary filmmaking at its finest, the film was five years in the making. Every single piece of information has been meticulously investigated, sourced and double-checked to corroborate the narrative being told.

This is a made with love and passion. Cernan knows how to tell a story, the nostalgia and pride in the astronaut’s face, whilst he reflects quickly draws you into the vacuum of space. At times, I felt like I was there with him.

That feeling of excitement has never left Cernan. He described the experience of seeing Earth, from the lunar surface as “sitting on God’s front porch.”

I felt ignorant going in to this, as I didn’t know much, if anything about Captain Cernan. After watching the documentary I would love to meet him, I have so many questions I would like to ask.

I highly recommend this film. In my eyes, Cernan stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Neil Armstrong.
The Last Man on the Moon is in cinemas from 8 April with a special Nationwide Live Q&A in cinemas with Captain Eugene Cernan only on 11 April hosted by Sir Jackie Stewart.

Zack Snyder explains Robin’s death

I know I’m going against the grain here, but I actually enjoyed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It was a deeply flawed movie, but it wasn’t as bad as people want it to be.

If you have seen the movie, then you know that there are glimpse into the DCU. One of those involves a Robin suit, in a glass display case with “HAHAHA The Joke’s On You Batman” graffitied on it.

Batman V Superman director Zack Snyder sat down with IGN, to explain that scene:

“In my mind, it was that Robin had died 10 years earlier, during some run-in with a young Joker, so there was a fun backstory there to play with. I felt like the whole idea was that there had been loss and there had been sacrifice. In a weird way, he had sacrificed everything to be Batman. He doesn’t really have a life outside the cave. I thought that including Robin, a dead Robin, was helping us understand that he’s been on quite a little journey.”

Ben Affleck has already co-written a Batman script

Last year, we heard a rumour that Ben Affleck was going to co-write a solo Batman film with legendary DC writer, Geoff Johns. Well, today the Hollywood Reporter has reported that the dynamic duo has completed the first draft and have submitted it to Warner Bros.

THR spoke to Patrick Whitesell (Affleck’s agent) who revealed the following information:

“He’s [Ben Affleck] contracted to do at least Justice League One and Two, so at least three times wearing the cape. There’s a script that he’s written that is a really cool [Batman] idea, so that’s out there as an option.”

It’s no secret that Batman V Superman has received mixed reviews, but Affleck’s Batman has been hailed as “the best Batman we’ve ever seen”. It remains to be seen exactly when Warner Bros. will fit a solo Batman film into their already packed release schedule, but I imagine they’ll find room for it.

In which Martyn and Gerrod stay sober, yes, really. They bring you a mostly spoiler-free reaction to series 2 of Daredevil.

Update on #drwhodaniel

Most of you will be aware that over the Christmas period, we teamed up with our good friends at Geeksynsicate, to help a very ill Doctor Who fan have a truly great Christmas.

For those of you unaware, Daniel is a very ill 14-year old, who also happens to be massive Doctor Who fan. He was originally admitted to a London hospital in November 2015 and is still there, he was recently moved to the intensive care unit.

He suffers from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and Postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) he is totally bed bound and is fed via IV.

We had a tremendous start to the campaign, but since society’s christmas spirit has become a distant memory, the campaign has mostly come to a grinding hault. We had great success with Sylvester McCoy, Christopher Eccleston and, Peter Capaldi. Boy We’ve hit a total brick wall with contacting any of the other Doctors.

He would also love to meet any actor who has been involved with the show.

More recently, Daniel receieved an autograph from Simon Pegg and, a letter from Katy Manning.

The Twitter hashtag #drwhodaniel is still running and we would appreciate it if you could spread the word.

Below are the video messages Daniel has already received.

Henry Cavill wants to be James Bond

It’s well-known that Henry Cavill was once Hollywood’s unluckist actor. He was very nearly Superman in Superman returns, he was very nearly Batman in Batman begins. He was also very nearly James Bond in Casino Royale.

The actor is clearly having success playing Superman, so that rules out Batman. But he still has a keen eye on the role of Bond. Whilst promoting Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on The Graham Norton Show, the actor was asked if he would consider taking over the role. Here’s what he had to say:

“I’m very busy with the Superman stuff, but if there were any windows and they wanted me to do that kind of role, it would be great. I would love to do it.”

Of course, despite speculation, the role is still Daniel Craig’s until he confirms his departure.

Review-Rivers of London: Night Witch

Drawn from Ben Aaronovitch’s novel Rivers of London, this serialised comic is co-written by Andrew Cartmel, who was Aaronovitch’s script editor on the Doctor Who television series.

Chapter one, page one we’re sat in a van with a trio conversing urgently in Russian. Balaclavas are pulled on, shotguns grabbed and then it’s out into a London morning for a meeting with The Night Witch.

Issue 1 is rich in the back story, much of it set in Russia. Politics and power, money and migrants and military women practising the Old Religion.

Varvara Sidorovna is doing time at HM Prison Holloway but her army past is causing trouble in her London present. This hasn’t escaped the attention of police constable Peter Grant, who spots the mysterious Faceless Man behind recent events just as the Russians have turned their attention to him as well.

Artist Lee Sullivan is also no stranger to the Doctor Who franchise. Here he shows his talent for pushing a lot of character out of the faces in his panels without resorting to outlandish facial features. He’s got a good exchange going with his colourist, Luis Guerrero; a reflective laptop screen and the ‘golden hour’ before dusk come to mind particularly.

During one flashback, an actual Russian stock certificate fills the page behind the panels, bringing a sense of high-def to the necessarily bold shapes of comic art. The technique was a good choice here; the last time I was so delighted by it was long ago in an adaptation of The Vampire Lestat.

The trickiest part of the read was that the visual focus of issue 1 is relatively even; main story and back story are interlaced but the transitions between the two aren’t very marked.

As a newcomer to The Rivers of London, I found the story stood alone quite well but after some research, it seems like this chapter puts PC Grant – the main character – into the background somewhat. Perhaps this is because it’s not the first tale from the novel and it’s only the first bit of the serial.

Night Witch issue 1 is a cracking bit of urban fantasy overall. The pace is good and the international angle contributes to a freshness that no modern tale of London can do without.

Gotham may be getting a spin-off

So, a strange thing has happened. DC have filled copyright on the name ‘Pennyworth’ as in Alfred Pennyworth, the character played by Sean Pertwee.

The copyright is for “production of live-action, dramatic comedy television series”.

Plot details have yet to be revealed but two things are happening, either Sean Pertwee is getting a spin-off, or this prequel series is getting a prequel series.
