Review-Doctor Who: Out of time

Covid 19 has been an utter horror, but it has given Doctor Who fans content we wouldn’t have gotten without it. Not only did we get a Sarah Jane Smith finale written by Russell T Davies, we also got the news that Christopher Eccleston has signed up to Big Finish.

It also enabled Big Finish to bring forward their release of Out of time 1. This was recorded entirely in lockdown and only happened because the events of this year cleared out David Tennant’s insane schedule.

Out of Time is the first, in a trilogy of original audio adventures that sees the Tenth Doctor pit himself against his most iconic foes, with a former Doctor by his side. In this story he’s joined by The Fourth Doctor, played by the legendary Tom Baker.

Multi-Doctor stories are nothing new, but this is the first time these two incarnations have met and it’s absolutely joyous. There’s the standard bickering we get when two Doctors meet, however there’s more love and mutual respect between these two.

Writer Matt Fitton perfectly manages to balance the tonal difference between two entirely different eras of the show. Ten and Four bounce of each other spectacularly well. Both lead actors absolutely soar in their respective roles.

Howard Carter’s music perfectly compliments the drama, punctuating the actors performances. The supporting cast are all on top form and Nicholas Briggs takes on a dual role as actor and director, he does both with absolute vigour. This is clearly a passion project for all involved, a love letter to Doctor Who and its fans.

Out of time may well be the best multi-Doctor story yet. I can’t wait for the second and third instalments.

Dalek tells humans to stay home

A Dalek has been spotted ordering people to stay indors.

Most of the UK is currently on a government-ordered lockdown as part of a national effort to save lives, although there are some members of the public who’ve been disregarding the guidelines this weekend, due to unseasonabily warm weather.

A video posted on Twitter has shown a Dalek, roaming the street in a countryside village.

As people have been so blatantly flouting the guidelines, I think we need Nicholas Briggs to redub this video with the official voice of the Daleks.

David Tennant talks about the moment he found out Jodie Whittaker was The Doctor

David Tennant is currently doing the press rounds for his new film, You, Me and Him. With series 11 of Doctor Who currently in production, inevitably questions about Jodie Whittaker have been asked. Here’s what he had to say:

“I suppose I was wondering, because Chris Chibnall used to write Broadchurch and Jodie Whittaker was on Broadchurch, so I was beginning to put two and two together a little bit before I found out the news.

Chris [Chibnall] called me and said: ‘The new Doctor would like to chat, is that okay? I’ve given her your number.’ I said, ‘all right,’ and the next phone call I get, Jodie’s name comes up.

It was wonderful because she’s so right for it and she’s so ready for it.

I think what the world will discover is just how funny and anarchic and crazy Jodie can be and that I’m sure she will channel into this part with great aplomb – it’s going to be fantastic.”

The Tenth Doctor and Rose to return!

David Tennant and Billie Piper are reprising their roles of the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler, respectively. For three new Doctor Who audio dramas from Big Finish Productions.

Executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery said:

“Getting David and Billie back together was definitely on my bucket list – two wonderful actors who created an era of Doctor Who which is so fondly remembered and brought a different aspect of the relationship between the Doctor and his companion to the fore – love, both platonic and unrequited. It’s great to have the Tenth Doctor and Rose back again!”

Nicholas Briggs added:

“It was such a special time for me, working with Billie and David on the TV show and it is such an honour to revisit it with them on audio.”

The set opens with Attack of the Zaross by John Dorney, in which an alien invasion of Earth isn’t quite what it appears to be – Camille Coduri guest stars as Jackie Tyler.

In the second adventure, Sword of the Chevalier by Guy Adams, the Doctor and Rose arrive in Slough in 1791 and encounter Chevalier D’Eon, an enigmatic ex-spy who has lived his life as a woman. Together they must fend off alien slavers, who have come to Earth to abduct valuable humans.

Finally, in Cold Vengeance by Matt Fitton, the TARDIS arrives on Coldstar, a vast frozen food asteroid in deep space. But there is something sinister defrosting in the network of storage units… the Doctor’s old enemies the Ice Warriors! Nicholas Briggs plays Ice Lord Hasskor and Warrior Slaan.

The Tenth Doctor Adventures: Volume 2 is released in November 2017.

David Tennant to guest on Family Guy

San Diego comic con is in full swing. At the Family Guy panel, it was revealed that former Doctor Who actor, David Tennant will briefly reprise his role as the Tenth Doctor, when the series returns later this year.

Tennant will appear as the tenth Doctor, in a breakaway scene in an episode of Family Guy. Other sketches include a remake of the princess bride, with Stewie and Bill Cosby.

Trailer-Big Finish:The Tenth Doctor Adventures

Big Finish have revealed the trailer for their upcoming Tenth Doctor Adventures. It sounds epic, Big Finish have been outstanding over the past year and I am so excited for this release. It sounds like they’ve gotten the Doctor/Donna banter down to a T.

Coming in May 2016, Doctor Who – The Tenth Doctor Adventures sees David Tennant and Catherine Tate reprise their fan-favourite roles as the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble in three all-new audio stories.

Featuring previews of all three releases – Doctor Who: Technophobia by Matt Fitton, Doctor Who: Time Reaver by Jenny Colgan and Doctor Who: Death and the Queen by James Goss – you can listen to the new trailer via the SoundCloud Player below.
