Big Finish reveal artwork for their tenth Doctor range

Big Finish has just given us our first look at the cover art, for their Tenth Doctor Adventures, which is due out in May.

The Tenth Doctor range sees the highly anticipated return of The tenth Doctor and Donna Noble, with David Tennant and Catherine Tate both reprising their roles.

1.1 Technophobia by Matt Fitton

When the Doctor and Donna visit London’s Technology Museum for a glimpse into the future, things don’t go to plan.

The most brilliant IT brain in the country can’t use her computer. More worrying, the exhibits are attacking the visitors, while outside, people seem to be losing control of the technology that runs their lives.

Is it all down to simple human stupidity, or is something more sinister going on?

Beneath the streets, the Koggnossenti are waiting. For all of London to fall prey to technophobia…

1.2 Time Reaver by Jenny T Colgan

Calibris. The spaceport planet where anything goes. Where anyone who doesn’t want to be found can be lost, and where everything has its price. Where betentacled gangster Gully holds sway at the smugglers’ tavern, Vagabond’s Reach.

The alien Vacintians are trying to impose some order on the chaos. Soon the Doctor and Donna discover why. An illegal weapon is loose on the streets. A weapon that destroys lives… Slowly and agonisingly.

The Time Reaver.

1.3 Death and the Queen by James Goss

Donna Noble has never been lucky in love.

So when, one day, her Prince does come, she is thrilled to have the wedding of all weddings to look forward to. Though the Doctor isn’t holding his breath for an invitation. And her future mother-in-law is certainly not amused.

But on the big day itself, Donna finds her castle under siege from the darkest of forces, marching at the head of a skeleton army.

When it looks like even the Doctor can’t save the day, what will Queen Donna do to save her people from Death itself?

Written By: Matt Fitton, Jenny T Colgan, James Goss

Ryan Reynolds interviews Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman is currently doing the press rounds for the upcoming sports drama, Eddie the Eagle. On one of those junkets he was surprised to find Ryan Reynolds in the interview chair. Reynolds crashed the junket and asked Jackman a bunch of questions, most of which were sly digs at X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Reynolds shared the video on his YouTube channel, which you can view below.

Wolverine 3 to be R-rated?

Well, that didn’t take long. After not wanting to make the film, it looks like 20th Century Fox is set to embrace the publics desire for R-rated superheroes. Following the box office success of Deadpool; it seems the studio has confirmed that Hugh Jackman’s last adventure as Logan, in Wolverine 3 will follow the example set by Deadpool. Here’s a leaflet handed out at a Toy Fair, which reveals the rating they’re aiming for.

It’ll be interesting to see if this actually happens, there are many superheroes that could benefit from an R-rating. Wolverine is certainly one of those.

Sacha Baron Cohen takes a dig at the lack of diversity

The lack of diversity in the entertainment industry has been a problem for a while, but things escalated this year after the nominations for the 2016 Oscar’s were announced.

None of the people nominated for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, or Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards were people of colour. The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite started trending immediately.

At tonight’s BAFTA awards, Sacha Baron Cohen took to the stage and took a stab at the problem.

He said:

“The main reason I agreed to present at this awards ceremony is that BAFTA has shown none of the discrimination and prejudice which is so shamefully on display at the Oscars. It gives me great pride that every year BAFTA makes sure that one of the lead actress nominees is a dame Dench…Smith. The nomination for best white actress goes to…”

#drwhodaniel update

Most of our readers will be aware that over the Christmas period, we teamed up with the lovely guys over at Geeksynsicate to help a very ill Doctor Who fan have a truly great Christmas.

For those of you unaware, Daniel is a very ill 14-year old, who also happens to be massive Doctor Who fan.

He suffers from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and Postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) he is totally bed bound and is fed via IV. He was admitted to a London hospital in November 2015 and is still there, as of February 2016. He’s also facing the minimum of another 3 month stay.

We had a tremendous start to the campaign, but we have started to stall now. We’ve hit a total brick wall with David Tennant and Matt Smith, both of whom Daniel would love to meet.

The Twitter hashtag #drwhodaniel is still running and we would appreciate it if you could spread the word.

6 comic book movies (most) people don’t realise are comic book movies

Blade

I guess a lot of people missed the Marvel logo at the start of this movie, as it never fails to surprise me just how many still don’t realise it’s a comic book movie.

Blade came on out in the summer of ’98 and was pretty successful, it had a budget of $45 million and ended its run with a profit of $70 million.

New line took a huge gamble here, it came out a year after a run of unsuccessful and critically panned comic book movies; Spawn, Steel, Batman and Robin. Warner Bros had also just cancelled Superman Lives.

The success of this opened the doors for the first X-men movie, which in turn opened the doors for Spider-Man.

Tamara Drewe

Yep, this one even surprised me. I had no idea Stephen Frears (director of The Queen) had made a comic book movie.

Tamara Drewe is a comic strip based on Thomas Hardy’s ‘far from the madding Cow’, that ran in The Guardian.

A history of violence

A History of Violence is the most recent on my list. It’s a gripping thriller that tells the tale of a small-town man whose violent past suddenly catches up with him, when he stops a robbery at his store.

The film differs from the comic in many ways. It’s more of straightforward crime story in the books, with much of the series dedicated to showing us the character’s backstory.
The film plays with ambiguity a lot more and leaves the wider spectrum to the viewers imagination.

Men in black

Before it was a successful Sony franchise, Men in black was a Marvel comic book series. Like the film, the comic follows a top-secret organisation who defend the Earth.

Unlike the film the MIB don’t just defend the world from alien threats. They also defend it from the supernatural, Demons, Werewolves, Vampires etc. It also has a much darker tone.

We still follow agents Jay and Kay, but agent Jay is a blonde white guy and the MIB aren’t quite the heroes the film portrays.

The Mask

Most remember this as one of Jim Carrey’s break-out 1994 movies. But its origin is also rooted in comic form.

Both the film and the comic have the same basic idea; a man discovers a magical mask that transforms him into an unstoppable force.

In the film, the mask just amplifies your inner personality, if you’re a hopeless romantic, you become what Jim Carrey’s character did.

However, In the series of comics by Dark Horse, the mask turns the wearer into a violent vigilante who dispenses cruel justice. In fact, New Line very nearly made it as horror, before opting to make it a comedy.

This gave Jim Carrey a hat-trick of successful comedies in 1994.

Road to Perdition

Published by DC Comics’ Paradox Press, ‘Road to Perdition’ tells the tale of the O’Sullivan family. We follow them, and their dealings with criminal underworld from the 1930’s-19’70s. The movie is set in the 30’s and is based on the first graphic novel, even though the film feels like “Oscar Bait” it’s surprisingly faithful to its source.

Grant Gustin shares first picture of Supergirl cross over

Just over week ago, we learned that the much rumoured crossover between The Flash and Supergirl was officially going to happen. Along with the 90’s Flash, Kara Zor-El is very briefly glimpsed during the next episode of The Flash, which airs next week on Sky One.

Grant Gustin (The Flash/Barry Allen) took to Instagram to share the first photo of him and Melissa Benoist (Supergirl), both wearing their superhero costumes. Barry Allen and Kara can be seen on set, while shooting “World Finest” — the eighteenth episode in the first series of Supergirl.

I fully expect The Flash to travel to an alternate Earth, where Supergirl exists. Trust me, it’s only a matter of time before Arrow shows up in Gotham.

Film review-Deadpool

The new Fox/Marvel superhero movie is loud, obnoxious, sarcastic, violent and sexually graphic. It’s also a tremendous lot of fun, at least for the fans.

This has been a passion project for Ryan Reynolds for the past eleven years. But Fox never had enough confidence in the project to green light a movie. They put the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, in an attempt to garner popularity and spin the character off. However they mishandled him terribly and the project looked dead. At some point in 2014, test footage for a solo movie leaked online. It was a huge internet sensation and this movie received the green light the next day.

The director Tim Miller’s background is in visual effects and it shows here, the opening credits fuse great action with sublime visual effects. Instead of the normal list of actors’ names, we get a tongue in cheek poke at the superhero/action movie clitches (“A Hot Chick. The comic relief. A British Villain. Directed by an overpaid douche bag”).

Shortly after, the Merc with a Mouth breaks the fourth wall and assures the audience that this is no ordinary superhero movie, “I may be super, but I’m no hero”.

Deadpool is looney toons, but with a face full of scars and a couple of swords. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but it will probably be your shot of Jack Daniel’s.

How day of the Doctor would have looked with Eccleston

We all know that Christopher Eccleston declined to take part in the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who. But, up until now we didn’t exactly know how the ninth Doctor would have fit in to the story.

Luckily for us bleeding cool have unearthed some early concept art, with Christopher Eccleston in place of Sir John Hurt.

What’s interesting is that had Eccleston appeared, Billie Piper wouldn’t have. Instead the moment would have taken the image of a young girl.
