Episode 237: Remembering Connery, Sean Connery

In which Martyn and Chris talk about the late-great Sir Sean Connery.

They also discuss what they’d like to see in future James Bond video games and, Chris explains why he’s quit Twitter.

Sean Connery was a Scottish actor, who gained worldwide recognition as the first actor to portray fictional British secret agent James Bond in film. He went on to star in seven Bond films between 1962 and 1983. Originating the role in ‘Dr. No’, Connery played Bond in six of Eon Productions’ entries and made his final appearance in the Jack Schwartzman-produced ‘Never Say Never Again’. He reprised the role in 2005, for a video game adaptation of ‘From Russia with love’. Connery won an Oscar for his role as Jim Malone, in the 1988 film ‘The Untouchables’.

Episode 232: New Mutants

Martyn and Gerrod discuss the 13th film in the X-Men franchise, they also discuss the latest Bond trailer and, John Boyega’s recent interview with GQ.

The New Mutants is a 2020 American teen-horror, based on the Marvel comics of the same name. It is the thirteenth and final installment in the X-Men franchise.

The film was directed by Josh Boone, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Knate Lee.

It stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga.

Episode 227: Doctor Who-Survival

Martyn, Sam, and Chris discuss the 1989 episode of Doctor Who ‘Survival’.

Survival is the final serial of the 26th season and also the final story of the original 26-year run of the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, which was originally broadcast in three weekly parts on BBC1 from 22 November to 6 December 1989. It marks the final regular television appearance of Anthony Ainley as the Master and of Sophie Aldred as Ace. It is also the last regular television appearance of Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor.

Journalist Matthew Sweet has described Survival as “a parable about Thatcherism”. In the serial, the renegade Time Lord the Master kidnaps humans from contemporary Perivale and uses the teenager Midge (Will Barton) to facilitate his escape from the disintegrating planet of the Cheetah People.

Episode 226: Star Trek-Picard

Martyn and Gerrod discuss the recent series of Star Trek: Picard, as well as other installments in the franchise. They also discuss world events and how funerals work in our strange times.

Star Trek: Picard premiered on January 23, 2020, and its first season ran for 10 episodes until March 26. The second and third seasons were ordered before the first season debuted. The series was met with positive reviews from critics, who highlighted Stewart’s performance and the focus on character over action but criticized the slow pace of the series. Several tie-in projects were created for the series, including an episode of the companion series Star Trek: Short Treks that serves as a prequel to Picard.
