Review-Raiders of the Lost Ark live.

I’ve been a long-time fan of the Indiana Jones franchise. I remember being transfixed, aged 8-when I saw my first instalment of the Saga (The Last Crusade). Steven Spielberg’s 1981 movie is still as exciting over thirty-years on.

This event was a world first, John Williams full score was performed by the 21st century Orchestra and conducted by their founder, Ludwig Wicki.

I’ll admit, I was sceptical when I first heard about this film/orchestral mash up. Just how would it work? It turns out, tremendously well.

The film played on a suspended screen, above the musicians. The dialogue and effect sounds were intact, with the Orchestra performing the soundtrack live. It wasn’t always successful, the Orchestra did very occasionally drown out some of the dialogue, but to combat this the film played with subtitles.

Not only are these amazing musicians a sight to behold on stage, but the evening provided a phenomenal audio experience too-that no Blu-Ray can possibly live up to. I’ve watched Raiders of the Lost Ark, a thousand times over but this felt like the first time.

My personal highlight of the evening, was by far the Orchestras performance of The Raiders of the Lost Ark theme, for which they received a four minute standing ovation.

What I took away from this event, is just how beautiful and timeless John Williams’ score is. This is an experience I will cherish for a life time.

I highly recommend attending one of these screenings. Click here to find out information about the next one.

Episode 147:RJ Mitte MCM roundtable

Martyn and Gerrod joined the RJ Mitte roundtable at the MCM Expo this weekend.

RJ Mitte is an American actor, producer, and model. He is best known for his role as Walter “Flynn” White Jr. on the AMC series Breaking Bad (2008–13).

Like his character on the show, he has cerebral palsy. After moving to Hollywood in 2006, he began training with personal talent manager Addison Witt. They sought acting opportunities where his disability would serve to educate viewers, which led him to audition for the role in Breaking Bad.

Look here for more information about MCM.

The podcast can be accessed via different places, including Audioboom, Tunein, Miro, Stiticher, Blubrry, Player fm and Itunes.

New names added to the Doctor Who festival

BBC Worldwide have announced some new names for the official Doctor Who Festival, which takes place this November in Excel.

Mark Gatiss (The Unquiet Dead, Night Terrors), Sarah Dollard (Primeval, Doctor Who Series 9, Episode 10), Toby Whithouse (Being Human, Doctor Who-School reunion), Catherine Tregenna (Torchwood, Doctor Who-The Woman Who Lived), Jamie Mathieson (Flatline, Mummy on the Orient Express) and Peter Harness (Kill The Moon, Invasion of the Zygons).
Will join the previously announced Peter Capaldi (The Doctor), Michelle Gomez (Missy), Ingrid Oliver (Osgood) and current showrunner  Steven Moffat. (Still no mention of Jenna Coleman).

BBC Worldwide have come under a lot of fire about the cost of the event, but honestly I think they’re making it worth your money.

Along with the guests and photo opportunities, there will be theatre panels with the show’s stars.
You’ll get to attend panels with all the series 9 writers, plus watch shows by real SFX and Millennium FX, and exclusive looks at three sets from Series 9.

Big Finish will also have a large presence there,  you’ll get the chance to take part in Acting sessions run by Nick Briggs. You’ll also get the chance to see what it’s like to work behind the scenes in production village.

This sounds like it’s shaping up to be a great event for any Doctor Who fan.

Tiny Ant-Man tickets hidden around the UK.

I absolutely love this, From tomorrow one hundred ant-sized IMAX tickets will be hidden around three UK cities – London, Manchester and Birmingham – to celebrate the IMAX® 3D release of ANT-MAN in UK cinemas this Friday.

The tiny tickets, each measuring just 5 x 10mm, can be exchanged for tickets to the most epic cinematic experience of ANT-MAN at IMAX cinemas across London, Manchester and Birmingham.
Clues to the locations of the tickets will be posted on IMAX’s Twitter page, beginning today.

Those who are successful in their hunt will be encouraged to tweet a selfie with their tiny ticket to @IMAX using the hashtag #IMAXAntMan.

The tickets will be left at various spots around the cities, each accompanied by a magnifying glass to aid the search.
