Episode 153:Talkin’ Daredevil

In which Martyn and Gerrod stay sober, yes, really. They bring you a mostly spoiler-free reaction to series 2 of Daredevil.

Daredevil, is a web television series created for Netflix by Drew Goddard, based on the Marvel Comics character  of the same name.

It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films of the franchise, and is the first in a series of shows that lead to The Defenders crossover miniseries.

The series is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios, with DeKnight Productions for the first season and Goddard Textiles for the first and second. Steven S. DeKnight serves as showrunner on the first season, with Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez taking over for the second.

Matt Murdoch will cameo in Jessica Jones

With Just under a month to go until we’re all binge watching Jessica Jones on Netflix, news has broke that Matt Murdoch will appear in the latest Marvel/Netflix collabration.

According to friend of Bad Wilf, Jon Schnepp Daredevil will definitely be making an appearance in Jessica Jones. We knew one day they would eventually meet, but I wasn’t sure if they would do it so soon, though. Schnepp says:

“You’re definitely gonna see Matt Murdock in Jessica Jones. That’s a fact. He’s in it. I don’t know how they interact, but he’s in the series.”

All four of the Netflix/Marvel series take place in the same corner of Hells kitchen and Daredevil was a huge hit for Netflix back in March, they’d be crazy not include him in some way.

Check out Jon Schnepp talking about it in the video below.

Jessica Jones is available on Netflix from the 20th of November.

Jon Bernthal cast as The Punisher

Rumors have been circulating for a while now, about The Punisher joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. More recently we heard that Frank Castle would appear in Daredevil, and now it’s been confirmed! Marvel announced yesterday that they’ve cast The Walking Dead star Jon Bernthal in the role for series 2.
Personally, I’ve enjoyed the three previous Punisher movies (yes, even the one with Dolph).

I think Bernthal is a great choice.

Marvel said:

“Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences. Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”

I’ve binged the entire first series twice now and I can’t wait for series 2.

Joss Whedon wanted a Daredevil movie

Joss Whedon is currently doing the press tour for Avengers:Age of Ultron (review coming soon). During one such interview, Whedon revealed that he actually fought with Marvel to make it a film, instead of a TV series.

He said:

“I fought for Daredevil to be a film instead of a TV show. Then under the auspices of Drew Goddard and Steven DeKnight.  I’m dying to see the show but they released it just as I started the press tour. If the show’s working, the show’s working. Comic books are serialised entertainment and a lot of them lend themselves to TV shows as much or more than they do to movies. I like Daredevil because he’s basically Marvel’s Batman, thanks to Frank Miller basically. So for me I didn’t think they’d be able to sustain that sort of mood on TV but TV has changed so much. It’s come up so much that I think it might just be the right place.”

Marvel kicked off the first of its four Netflix shows earlier this month, with Daredevil. The 13-part series landed on our devices on April the 10th. I’ve already binge watched it twice (review coming soon).

Ultimately, I think Marvel were right to go for a series. Netflix allows them to enter the slightly grittier side of the MCU, that mainstream American networks would never allow. I really hope the rumoured Netflix Punisher show is true.
