Episode 163:The Eggmen Cometh

In which Martyn and Gerrod attempt to discuss the 1997 movie, Men in Black. However, they end up talking about their problems with Steven Moffat’s era of Doctor Who.

Review-Blair Witch

In 1999, The Blair Witch Project shook Hollywood to its very core, two young filmmakers managed to break new ground and breathe life into the found footage sub-genre. As well as breaking box office records, it was the first movie to realise the true potential of Internet marketing.

Like with most franchises that have a dud sequel, Blair Witch pretends Book of Shadows never happened and serves as a direct sequel to the original. 

The new film focuses on James (James Allen McCune) who happens to be the younger brother of, Heather, who disappeared in the first film. James and his film student girlfriend Lisa (Callie Hernandez) find a video on the internet, which convinces James that even after twenty years, Heather may still be alive. 

James decides that no matter how remote a chance, he has to take it. So he and Lisa, along with their friends Peter (Brandon Scott) and Ashley (Corbin Reid) head into the woods in Burkittsville, Maryland (formerly Blair), where they meet local odd-couple Lane (Wes Robinson) and Talia (Valorie Curry), who posted the video online.

From there on in, the film is pretty much a rehash of all the things that made The Blair Witch Project so original. We get stick figures, piles of rocks, handprints and steady-cam POV footage of actors running through the woods, whilst screaming. 

Back in ’99 this all felt fresh original, but now it’s been done to death. Apart from slightly expanding the mythology surrounding the stick figures, there’s nothing innovative here. 

This feels less like a sequel and more like a modern day remake, the slow-burn of the original, along with rawness of the grainy footage has been replaced by quick glossy digital cuts. Nothing about this film feels found, it’s sleek and well-crafted, to maximise the profits from the YouTube generation. 

The fact that James is Heather’s brother is entirely tangential and unnecessary. 

I suppose in many ways, this film is poetic. The Blair Witch Project kick started the found footage sub-genre, it’s only fitting that Blair Witch is the final nail in its coffin.

 

Christopher Eccleston regrets not doing more Doctor Who

Long-term readers may remember that way back in 2011, Christopher Eccleston told us that he left Doctor Who, because of the “bullying ” during the production.

Over the years, he’s expanded on this. But recently during an interview with 774 ABC Melbourne, he expressed regret in not staying on for another series.

He said:

“It was kind of tragic for me, that I didn’t play him for longer. He’s a beautiful character and I have a great deal of professional pride and had I done a second season, there would have been a marked improvement in my performance. I was learning new skills, in terms of playing light comedy. I was not known for light comedy and again, production did not allow for that. It’s very important that on a first series you make an informed and intelligent choice, even if it means breaking the budget, about getting the first director who is going to set the tone for the season, how the actors relate and that did not happen. Disaster.

But, the show has survived. Thank god. Capaldi and Matt and David are just brilliant and, I Know how brilliant they are. Because I’ve been inside it. I know how difficult it is.”

Vlog 9:Cardiff (Doctor Who experience).

Gerrod and I recently took a trip into Cardiff, we visited the Doctor Who experience, paid tribute to Ianto Jones and, caught at Pikatchu.

The exhibition began with a short film and a walk-through adventure inside the Eleventh Doctor’s first TARDIS interior and in various locations. Later, after the replacement of Matt Smith visitors were guided through the adventure, by the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi).

Following the adventure portion guests were free to roam two floors of exhibitions including original costumes from ten of the twelve Doctors (the first two being replicas as the originals were lost). Alien prosthetics, Daleks and Cybermen over history, Sonic devices, the TARDIS interiors belonging to the First Doctor, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, and the Ninth Doctor and Tenth Doctor and presented. Many other show memorabilia and artefacts were also on display, including costumes from the companions since 2005 including: Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Donna Noble, Captain Jack Harkness, Amy Pond and Rory Williams.

Episode 161:Star Wars:Rebels press conference

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to attend the Star Wars:Rebels series 3 press con, at Star Wars celebration. In attendance were Dave Filoni, Sam Witwer and, Tiyer Sircar.

Thrawn is discussed, Tom Baker is radiant.

Star Wars Rebels is a 3D CGI animated television series produced by Lucasfilm Animation.

With its story beginning fourteen years after Revenge of the Sith and five years before A New Hope, Rebelstakes place during an era when the Galactic Empireis securing its grip on the galaxy. Imperial forces are hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights while a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking form. The visual style of Star Wars Rebels is inspired by the original Star Wars trilogy concept art by Ralph McQuarrie.
