Sony Pictures announced yesterday that they are developing an animated film based on the exploits of Spidey. I’m excited by this news, as they’ve hired The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller to write and produce the feature.
The movie has been given the US release date of July 20th, 2018.
The animated movie will not be connected to the new Spider-Man universe that Marvel and Sony are building. I’ve long been a fan of the short lived MTV/Sony series from 2003, starring Neil Patrick Harris. I think there is room for an animated Spider-Man, but they should go the series route.
Having said that, I do hope the movie succeeds.
It’s widely known that Marvel had at one time approached Sony about using Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The plan was for him to appear in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, as the character played a huge part in the comic of the same name. But, for whatever reason the deal fell through. Sony is currently in the middle of a “Spidey summit” to discuss the wall crawlers future and, it seems that a deal may have been reached between Marvel and Sony that will see Peter Parker team up with The Avengers in the infinity war.
Latino Review have broken the news about the cross-over and full details can be found here.
The Sony hack gets more interesting every day.
A few weeks ago we learned that Marvel had approached Sony about the possibility of a Spider-Man cameo in Captain America:Civil War.
Today, some new details have emerged detailing just how Marvel wanted to use Spider-Man in the storyline.
It has also been revealed that he would have appeared in the two-part Avengers: Infinity War.
Marvel wanted Sony to launch a new Spider-Man series following Civil War. The new set of films wouldn’t directly continue the plot from civil war, but it would be made clear that it was in the same universe.
Spider-Man would have met the Avengers after Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) recruited him for the team. He would have gone on a mission with them, before returning to Sony for his own solo movie.
He would have then returned to assist in Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2. With Sony then having to release a second Spider-Man movie in 2019.
I would absolutely love to see a Spider-Man team up with The Avengers, but I would miss Andrew Garfield in the role. He was the saving grace of the past two movies.
This image from the set of Avengers 2, has been setting social media on fire.
The man trying his best to not be seen, looks an awful lot like Spider-Man.
It’s difficult to make out from the picture, but the mask is almost identical to the one Andrew Garfield wears in the Amazing Spider-Man 2, even the eye holes are in the right place. Of course, a red glove and mask do not a spider-man costume make, and It’s possible that I’m getting 5 from 2+2. But the fanboy in me really wants it to be so.
Marvel and Sony do have a great working relationship, Marvel have never held the toy licensing from Sony, like they have with Fox and they even printed a movie tie-in range of comics to bridge the gap between The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
I predict that if any studio were to cross franchises, it would be Marvel and Sony.
For comparison the image below was taken between takes on the Amazing Spider-Man.
