Comedians talking about football

Listeners to this podcast will be aware that Sam has his own podcast, called ‘comedians talking about football’. On his latest episode he is joined by Moss Side born Lew Fitz (that’s Lew, not Lewis) as seen and heard on BBC Three and BBC Radio 4 talks about the rise and rise of Manchester CIty.

Growing up in a family full of “Reds” – Lew talks about why in Manchester United’s 1998/99 treble-winning season he decided to choose (then) Division 1 side Man City over arguably the greatest team in the world at that time.

In all his years supporting Man City he’s seen his club go from playing England goalkeeper David James as striker, to be coming Premier League point scoring record holders under Pep Guardiola. We also talk about how it felt watching City, Man Utd’s “noisy neighbours” lift the title for the very first time… while in Miami, which Lew, from Moss Side, describes as a “soulless place” :D

Trailer for Audible’s Sandman adaptation

Audible and DC has shared the first trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s classic graphic novel series The Sandman. The trailer is our first glimpse at the audio of James McAvoy’s Lord Morpheus.

App Icon Apple Music

The audio play has been adapted and directed by Dirk Maggs, and boasts an incredible voice cast that includes Taron Egerton as John Constantine, Riz Ahmed as the Corinthian, Kat Dennings as Death, Samantha Morton as Urania Blackwell, Bebe Neuwirth as the Siamese Cat, Andy Serkis as Matthew the Raven, Michael Sheen as Lucifer, and many more.

Here’s the synopsis:

When The Sandman, also known as Lord Morpheus—the immortal king of dreams, stories, and the imagination—is pulled from his realm and imprisoned on Earth by a nefarious cult, he languishes for decades before finally escaping. Once free, he must retrieve the three “tools” that will restore his power and help him to rebuild his dominion, which has deteriorated in his absence. As the multi-threaded story unspools, The Sandman descends into Hell to confront Lucifer (Michael Sheen), chases rogue nightmares who have escaped his realm, and crosses paths with an array of characters from DC comic books, ancient myths, and real-world history, including Inmates of Gotham City’s Arkham Asylum, Doctor Destiny, the muse Calliope, the three Fates, William Shakespeare (Arthur Darvill), and many more.

The play also includes an original musical score by Academy Award winner James Hannigan.

The Sandman is set to launch on Wednesday, July 15th.

Review-The Last of us part II

The Last of Us 2 has dominated my thoughts and has become the foremost thing in my mind as I go to bed and the first thing that I think about when I wake up. I have been replaying the sequences in my head, marvelling at their intricate design and pondering how I could have done things differently. The many unforgettable cutscenes are etched into my memory as if they were real experiences, so powerful in their emotional intensity that they now appear in my dreams and nightmares regularly.

I have spent hours processing everything that I have played, attempting to come to grips with the densely packed storyline and uncovering new aspects of the game’s craftsmanship. In short, The Last of Us Part 2 is an exceptional game and quite possibly the best one I have played in this generation.

To avoid spoilers, I won’t discuss any plot details that haven’t been revealed by Naughty Dog. The game is a revenge western companion piece to the original, set five years after the events of the first game. After a harrowing opening sequence, Ellie is determined to hunt down those responsible for a heinous crime, taking her from the rural landscapes of Jackson County to the urban overgrowth of Seattle, where she must confront new and unique threats.

The Last of Us Part 2 is a tale of retribution that evolves into something more intricate, unexpected, and dark. Naughty Dog expertly exploits the interactive nature of the medium, forcing players to confront every action they take as Ellie, often resulting in discomfort and distress. The 25-hour campaign is full of breathtaking moments and moving scenes that leave a lasting impact.

Ashley Johnson gives an outstanding performance as Ellie, depicting the complexity of suffering with warmth and humanity. The facial animation technology seamlessly captures even the smallest body language changes, adding depth to the character’s emotions. The cast of characters surrounding Ellie is equally compelling, with new additions and returning characters that are multi-dimensional and well-rounded.

The world of The Last of Us Part 2 is intricately detailed and crammed with bespoke minutiae, offering a glimpse into the world that Ellie never knew and the one she’s all too familiar with. Naughty Dog’s environmental design guides players along the critical path while still allowing for exploration and discovery. Ellie’s new abilities allow for more diverse environmental puzzles that enrich combat and exploration, creating a sense of place that is distinctive and unforgettable.

Epsiode 229: talking comedy

Martyn, Chris, and Sam are back. This week, they’re talking comedy. But what exactly is comedy and, who decides what’s funny?

The dictionary describes comedy as;

professional entertainment consisting of jokes and sketches, intended to make an audience laugh.”

But, is that an accurate or relevant description? Your dynamic trio discuss their favourite comedians/influences, such as Lee Evans, Robin Williams, Paul Whitehouse, Shappi Khorsandi, Jon Culshaw and, Dave Chappelle.

They also talk about “cancel culture” and ask questions such as “should it be one rule for comedians and one rule for everyone else?” and “what role should context play when telling a joke?”

The intro is taking from Dave Chappelle’s 2019 Netflix special ‘sticks & stones’.

Trailer-Bill &Ted face the music

Here is the excellent first trailer for the upcoming ‘Bill & Ted face the music’.

Following 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and 1991’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, the stakes are higher than ever for William “Bill” S. Preston Esq. (Winter) and Theodore “Ted” Logan (Reeves). Yet to fulfill their rock and roll destiny, the now middle-aged best friends set out on a new adventure, when a visitor from the future warns them that only their song can save life as we know it and bring harmony to the universe. Along the way, they will be helped by their families, old friends and a few music legends.

Review-Mortal Kombat:Aftermath

A year after its initial release, Mortal Kombat 11 has been given a major update. Mortal Kombat: Aftermath gives players new characters, some new stages, a new story, and some very exciting surprises.

The story picks up right where Mortal Kombat 11 left off. Shang Tsung is attempting to convince the other heroes, that he should be sent back in time in order to retrieve Kronika’s crown and save the space-time continuum. This is more or less, what you’d expect from NetherRealm. The studio has set themselves up as the top-tier storytellers, in fighting games.
The three new characters are; Fujin, Sheeva, and, Robocop. Robocop’s inclusion makes no sense, but this is Mortal Kombat. Nothing makes sense and that’s where the joy lies.

And Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath contains a lot of joy, that will please new and old fans alike. There’re loads of obscure references and Easter Eggs, that will go over the head of new players. But please long-time aficionados.

Much like with Mortal Kombat 11, the graphics are incredible and gory. This is not a game for the faint heart. However, I feel I must mention the price. It’s pretty hefty, You can get the original game with Aftermath for £50 (or Aftermath plus the Kombat Pack for £40), which is a pretty decent deal, but at £40 for a couple of extra hours gameplay and a few extra characters, you’re essentially paying the price of a new game.
But, if the price doesn’t bother you and you’re itching to play as Robocop, then you’re in for a fun time.

Those who already own Mortal Kombat 11can purchase the Mortal Kombat: Aftermath expansion now digitally for £34.99 / €39.99 (SRP) or the Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath + Kombat Pack Bundle digitally for £39.99 / €49.99 (SRP).

Henry Cavill in talks to play Superman again

According to Deadline, Henry Cavill is in talks to reprise his role as Superman in the Warner Bros DCEU.

Cavill has always been positive towards the role and has made it clear, that he would love to come back. As and when the studio need him.

The news comes just a week after Zack Snyder announced his cut of Justice League, will stream on HBO Max.

It looks like Cavill’s return won’t be for a man of steel sequel, but as a supporting character in other films. The Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman 1984 are already in the can, so if I were a betting man, I’d place money on him showing up in Black Adam, and Shazam 2. With a possible cameo in The Flash.

What’s interesting, is that Cavill started hitting the gym again yesterday…
