Thoughts on Spider-Man leaving the MCU

Normally, I’d record this as a quick podcast. But I’m away at the moment and don’t have access to any of my equipment.

News broke recently, that the current deal between Sony and Disney/Marvel has broken down. There seems to be a lot of misinformation/misunderstanding of why the Sony/Disney deal happened in the first place.

A surprising amount of people think it’s because The Amazing Spider-Man films were financial flops. They weren’t. Far from it. They received a critical panning. But they were financially successful. The first one was the seventh highest grossing film of 2012, the second was the ninth highest grossing film of 2014. These are far from the duds so many Marvel fans are claiming.

The original deal happened because the head of Sony (Kenichiro Yoshida) felt dishonoured by Andrew Garfield. In Japanese culture, being dishonoured is a pretty serious thing. Garfield didn’t show up to the event in Rio, that was announcing The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4, The Sinister Six and, the wider Spider-Man universe. He’d also turned up to meetings unkempt and seemed entirely disinterested-making the Yoshida feel dishonoured. He wanted Garfield gone.

The company then found themselves in the position where they would either have to recast and make The Amazing Spider-Man 3, or reboot it again. For the third time in 15 years. Understandably Sony Pictures didn’t want to reboot. Which is why they initially turned the deal down. It was only when Kenichiro Yoshida wanted the deal, that it was accepted. Yoshida felt that rebooting the character for a third time, but into the MCU would limit damage control and garner good will with the audience. For both companies, which it did.

The deal was Disney would get to use him for 5 films. Starting with Captain America: Civil War, ending with Avengers: End Game. In exchange for this use, Disney would produce 2 films for Sony-with Sony maintaining distribution rights. In exchange for these films, Disney would get 5% the box office takings and all the money from Spider-Man merchandise.

Essentially, the MCU deal happened because the owner of Sony got offended. Not because Sony needed Disney-the deal was mutually beneficial for both parties, but either would’ve still been okay without the other.

Venom-Blu Ray review

Venom is a bold project for Sony, they’re attempting to launch a Spider-Man universe, without Spider-Man. They want this universe to stand alone, but they don’t want to rule out the chance of a future crossover.

Whilst it’s never stated this is in the MCU (Marvel cinematic universe) they don’t say anything to contradict that it isn’t. Instead of New York, the action takes place in San Francisco.

Tom Hardy plays Eddie Brock, an investigative journalist. Eddie lives with his fiancé Anne (Michelle Williams), a successful lawyer, working for a firm that represents the controversial billionaire Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed).

One night, Eddie makes a bad decision and ends up losing his job, his relationship and his apartment.

Cut to six months later. Eddie has given up on himself — but when Dr Dora Skirth (Jenny Slate), a scientist who works for Drake, tells Eddie that Drake is sacrificing homeless people in mad experiments, Eddie decides to leap back into action to expose him. Whilst exploring the lab, Eddie gets bonded with an alien, that calls itself Venom.

All of a sudden we’re in a slapstick/buddy comedy. Invoking the obligatory talking alien mechanical baritone, Venom at first barks out primal commands such as “HUNGRY!” and “FOOD!”, but soon he’s commenting on Eddie’s romantic life and opening up about how he was considered a “loser” on his home planet.



The movie is a strange beast, it never truly settles on an identity. It’s unevenly dumb, part superhero movie, part horror/comedy and it doesn’t really do either well. It is funny? Yes, at times. I’ll admit I laughed. But, not always at the times the film wanted me to.

According to Hardy his favourite bits of the film, are the 40 minutes that ended up on the cutting room floor. He’s also said in interviews, that he mostly improvised his scenes. This could explain some of the choppy editing, or inconsistencies in the characters’ motivations.

The film wants us to want Eddie and Anne back together, but they’ve put her in a relationship with Dr Dan, probably the nicest/most understanding man in the universe. Venom feels like it fell through a time vortex, this is like a pre-MCU superhero movie. Something akin to 2003’s Daredevil.

The special effects are underwhelming. The CGI is terrible and the fight scenes are predictable and murky at best. The villains — human and extraterrestrial — are forgettable. And neither the ordinary guy nor his alter ego is particularly compelling to watch.

This film cements Tom Hardy, as the British Nicholas Cage.

Spider-Man reboot rumoured to be called Spider-Man:Homecoming

Tom Holland is about to make his debut as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. The character will also star in his own MCU connected, solo movie in 2017, directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car). However; specific information on the reboot remain tightly under wraps at the joint Marvel/Sony compound.

rumoured titles such as; The Spectacular Spider-Man, and Spider-Man: The New Avenger have been doing th rounds since the Sony/Marvel deal was announced.

According to the BBC, Sony Pictures  have registered the domain name ‘SpiderManHomecomingTheMovie.com’. Which seems to suggest that Spider-Man: Homecoming could in fact be the upcoming film reboot. However, that doesn’t guarantee it. Studios will often register multiple domain names, just in case.

Benedict Cumberbatch stops by New York comic book shop, dressed as Doctor Strange

Production wrapped yesterday on the upcoming Marvel movie, Doctor Strange. To celebrate, director Scott Derrickson and, Benedict Cumberbatch stopped by New York comic book store, JHU Comics. Cumberbatch was in full Doctor Strange costume, he even took time to pose for pictures with the staff.

JHU even released their security camera footage, which captured the event. He shows up around the 50-second mark.

Tom Holland shows off Spidey flips

It’s hard to believe that we’re just two short months away from seeing Captain America:Civil War. The thing I’m most excited about seeing in this movie is Tom Holland’s take on Spider-Man. Back in August, the actor posted a video on his instagram account which showed him practising some moves.

Yesterday, he posted a video of himself doing something called a “side summy” it’s pretty impressive.

We still haven’t seen the new Spider-Man costume, but I assume that’s because both Sony and Marvel are still ironing out the finer points in their contract.

I’m sure Holland will be great in the role, but personally I would have brought Andrew Garfield back. In my version, Peter Parker would now be in his late thirties, retired and married to Mary Jane. Something would have happened that made him put on the famous suit again, I would have then killed Peter Parker off. Given him a heroes send-off, he would have died saving The Avengers. I would have then introduced Miles Morales in the post credit scene and kicked off a new franchise, with a new Spidey.

Film review-Deadpool 

The new Fox/Marvel superhero movie is loud, obnoxious, sarcastic, violent and sexually graphic. It’s also a tremendous lot of fun, at least for the fans. 

This has been a passion project for Ryan Reynolds for the past eleven years. But Fox never had enough confidence in the project to green light a movie. They put the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, in an attempt to garner popularity and spin the character off. However they mishandled him terribly and the project looked dead. At some point in 2014, test footage for a solo movie leaked online. It was a huge internet sensation and this movie received the green light the next day. 

  
The director Tim Miller’s background is in visual effects and it shows here, the opening credits fuse great action with sublime visual effects. Instead of the normal list of actors’ names, we get a tongue in cheek poke at the superhero/action movie clitches (“A Hot Chick. The comic relief. A British Villain. Directed by an overpaid douche bag”). 

Shortly after, the Merc with a Mouth breaks the fourth wall and assures the audience that this is no ordinary superhero movie, “I may be super, but I’m no hero”.

  
Deadpool is looney toons, but with a face full of scars and a couple of swords. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but it will probably be your shot of Jack Daniel’s. 

Episode 149:Clara’s arse

In a rare episode, Gerrod and Martyn stay sober whilst recording. They discuss the Twitter campaign Martyn is currently running with Barry from Geeksyndicate, as well as the trailers for Captain America:Civil war and Batman V Superman.

They also discusss if the word “arse” has any place in Doctor Who.

Tom Holland shows us his Spider-Man training 

I had long heard that Tom Holland was a highly skilled gymnast but I hadn’t actually seen any footage. Recently, he posted a video on his Instagram account so that we can see how he’s coming along. It is very, very impressive.

Holland’s Spider-Man will make his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War, which is released worldwide on the 6th of May, 2016.

Mark Ruffalo talks Hulk standalone movie

Ever since Mark Ruffalo first smashed in the Avengers, fans have wanted to see him star a solo Hulk movie. Whilst speaking to USA Today, Ruffalo said:

“Actually, it feels even further away from happening” Ruffalo said of a spin-off movie. “It’s not Marvel’s property, it’s Universal’s property. I don’t know. It seems really problematic. I’ve been around long enough to be ok with it. There’s only so much that’s in my power and I’m not going to agonise over what is not in my power. I definitely try to limit that to my kids and the things that really matter to me.

I’d love to do it, it’d be really fun. There’s a lot still to do with the character. I always try to think about different places we could go with him.
Universal, who produced Ang Lee’s 2003 Hulk and the 2008 reboot The Incredible Hulk, still hold the rights to any Hulk standalone film, meaning Marvel would have to strike a deal with them and essentially partner with a rival studio.

Ruffalo will next appear as the Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok.

He said of the team up:

“I think they’ll probably fight. There’s no doubt, everyone wants us to fight at one point.”

Matt Murdoch will cameo in Jessica Jones

With Just under a month to go until we’re all binge watching Jessica Jones on Netflix, news has broke that Matt Murdoch will appear in the latest Marvel/Netflix collabration.

According to friend of Bad Wilf, Jon Schnepp Daredevil will definitely be making an appearance in Jessica Jones. We knew one day they would eventually meet, but I wasn’t sure if they would do it so soon, though. Schnepp says:

“You’re definitely gonna see Matt Murdock in Jessica Jones. That’s a fact. He’s in it. I don’t know how they interact, but he’s in the series.”

All four of the Netflix/Marvel series take place in the same corner of Hells kitchen and Daredevil was a huge hit for Netflix back in March, they’d be crazy not include him in some way.
